  • A few days ago PROY-NOM-001-SSA-2023 was presented but it has not yet been approved.
  • An IMSS resident ended up so tired after a shift that he fell asleep while driving back home and caused a spectacular accident.

A fairly common complaint within the health profession in our country is about the long working hours. It is a problem that starts from the rotations in hospitals although it has its most serious stage when studying a specialty. The risks are not only experienced inside the hospital but also when leaving, and that was exactly what happened with a resident of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

In the first instance, it is necessary to remember that despite the constant complaints, the educational system has not been substantially modified. With this in mind, the days of any residence implies having to work for 36 hours without a break. For the same reason, there are many who consider that it is a form of modern slavery.

For its part, the current regulation is NOM-EM-001-SSA3-2022 on health education for the organization and operation of medical residences in medical care establishments. But just like in other fields, nothing is permanent; it is constantly updated.

The new NOM project for medical residences

Just a few days ago the PROY-NOM-001-SSA-2023 was presented. It is a health education project focused on the organization and operation of medical residences in health care establishments. Although it is still under review and it is likely that some changes will be made to it.

Back to the story of the IMSS resident, everything was generated in Veracruz. According to local reports, a 24-year-old young man who is studying his specialty in Traumatology and Orthopedics at the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) No. 14 suffered a serious accident.

The reason is because he fell asleep while driving his truck back to his house. The “positive” part is that there were no lives to be regretted, although expensive property damage was caused.

According to the traffic report, the car crashed into a streetlight and then flipped over to end up wheels-up in the oncoming lane.

For their part, thanks to the immediate support of the paramedics, the necessary care was provided to the IMSS resident. Thanks to the fact that he was wearing a seat belt, he did not suffer any major consequences and only had a sprain in his left wrist.

After what happened, the young man gave his statement and He stated that everything was generated because he fell asleep while driving. The reason is that he was so exhausted after his watch that he simply fell exhausted behind the wheel.

However, this situation is not isolated but rather a common complaint. Fortunately, on this occasion, there were no fatal consequences with the IMSS resident, but it generated a debate regarding the changes that must be made to end the extreme work days during the residency.
