Description of what happened

In this sense, it is time to talk about a feat achieved by a multidisciplinary team from the IMSS-BIENESTAR Specialty Hospital “Dr. Antonio González Guevara” located in Nayarit. Thanks to the group effort, a surgical procedure called “cranial remodeling and bilateral fronto-orbital advancement” was performed. As a result, the neurodevelopment of a one-year-old girl will significantly benefit.

Specialist José Alberto Cruz Cruz, pediatric neurosurgeon, explained that two months ago he received a one-year-old patient. The minor had a facial skull asymmetrya rare condition in children, so treatment was given and the greatest possible benefit was achieved.

What is craniosynostosis?

A Pediatric specialist from this Specialty Hospital diagnosed craniosynostosis, that is, the premature fusion of the skull structures. This condition causes an anatomical deformity in the cranial vault and, consequently, a restriction in brain growth and functional limitation and maturity of the nervous tissue.

The main objective of this operation with a high degree of precision and care was to promote the child’s neurodevelopment, performance and all her intellectual abilities before the age of 2.

“By having all the material and what was necessary in this Institution, it was possible to perform this surgery, which is a cranial remodeling with bilateral fronto-orbital advancement. This consists of making some cuts in the places where the cranial vault has already closed completely, expanding those spaces, to allow the brain to continue its growth, maturation and normal development.”

He highlighted that, thanks to the support of the multidisciplinary team of health professionals, who were involved in this first intervention, a successful surgery was achieved, thus ensuring good neurodevelopment for the little girl.
