Last year, The Marechaussee encountered a record number of fake passports and ID cards during border controls, the military said based on annual data from the ID and Document Fraud Center, writes NOS.

At airports and during random checks along the border with Germany and Belgium, the Marechaussee intercepted 1598 false documents last year compared to 1465 in 2021. This was already an increase of almost 10% compared to 2020, comparable to the figures from before the pandemic. Last year, the Marechaussee thus recorded a further increase in the number of cases of fraud on travel, residence and identity documents.

The Marechaussee has also recorded attempts to cross the border with someone else’s passport: people sometimes even try to cross the border with “fake documents” from non-existent organizations or countries. For example, the spokesman cites the attempt by someone to enter the Netherlands with a “passport” from Abkhazia, a secessionist region of the Caucasus which is not formally a country.

Most of the cases involve immigration or crime, the spokesperson said.
