(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 16 – In 2023 the Alpine and Speleological Rescue completed 12,349 rescue missions for a total of 12,365 people rescued, of which 7,622 were injured and 491 people died. Over the last 70 years, over 18,000 victims and 141,000 injured people have been recovered by Cnsas. The Corps carries out technical rescues – medical and otherwise – in mountain environments, in caves and in the harsh environments of the national territory with 7,000 highly specialized operators. The various activities, carried out with the National Health Service/118 system, were aimed at guaranteeing immediate rescue and assistance to injured subjects, to people in difficulty in various ways, to subjects in imminent danger of their lives or at risk of health evolution , to the search and rescue of the missing and the recovery of the fallen. Over the course of last year, Alpine and Speleological Rescue intervened in 12,349 rescue missions (including data from Val d’Aosta). Compared to the overall staff of the Alpine and Speleological Rescue, which has consistently exceeded 7,000 technicians in recent years, in 2023 over 206 thousand man-hours were involved in rescue operations divided into 33,852 man-days. The most significant data is, therefore, that of the 44,994 technicians involved in the various rescue missions, volunteers who guarantee operational activity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Also important in this context is the commitment of the CNSAS dog units called to operate 168 times in avalanche events and search for missing people. The causes of interventions are mainly due to three factors: falls/slips (45.9% of interventions), incapacity during the activity carried out (25.5%) and illness (12.1%). Bad weather (4.3%) and anaphylactic shock (0.50%) follow with decidedly lower values. 5,720 people were recovered with minor injuries, 1,579 were seriously injured, 323 were injured with compromised vital functions, 4,151 were uninjured (people in difficulty due to morphological conditions, the state of the land such as the presence of snow and/or ice on the ground, or due to incapacity and/or inadequacy of the equipment, footwear or clothing subsequently) and 101 the missing. 49% of Alpine and Speleological Rescue interventions are concentrated in the summer months, mainly located in the Northern regions. The average identikit of the person rescued is represented by an Italian man between 50 and 60 years old. In 5,845 interventions the Alpine and Speleological Rescue intervened with the support of an aerial vehicle. Two national and international interventions characterized the 2023 work of the Alpine and Speleological Rescue. In May, CNSAS teams carried out numerous rescue operations following the flood that hit the Emilia-Romagna region. In September, on the evening of Monday 11th, the recovery of Mark Dickey, the American speleologist who was stuck at around 1000 meters deep in the Morca cave, in the province of Mersin, in Turkey, was successfully concluded (ANSA).
