According to the forecasts of the Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology of Latvia, heavy snowfall is possible in the capital city on Monday afternoon, which will continue until Tuesday, so Riga municipality will introduce the so-called “snow tickets” on Monday.
As the municipality notes, ice, a layer of snow will form on the roads and visibility will deteriorate, so driving conditions may be difficult on the streets of the capital. All municipal services and available equipment will be involved in the maintenance of streets and sidewalks, however, in order to facilitate street cleaning and reduce possible traffic jams, residents are invited to use public transport as much as possible.
The municipality estimates that the majority of cars are already equipped with summer tires, so the Riga municipality calls on residents to be especially cautious, to choose to perform work duties remotely, to travel by public transport, or to plan the departure time and route in time, taking into account that there may be need to spend more time than usual.
On Monday, the light vehicle registration certificate or car technical passport will be considered as a valid document for driving in public transport. The mentioned document must be presented as a document valid for driving only during the control, it does not need to be presented to the public transport driver. “Snow tickets” can be used by any adult, taking the vehicle’s technical passport with them during the trip. It is not necessary to have a driver’s license with you.
Such tickets are introduced by the municipality in order to reduce traffic intensity during or after heavy snowfall, thus facilitating the work of street maintenance equipment.
As reported, the new working week will start with very heavy snowfall in some places in Latvia, warns the Center of Environment, Geology and Meteorology of Latvia.
At night, the sky will be covered by clouds, but in the west of Kurzeme, the sky will clear up in the first half of the night. Precipitation – rain and sleet – is expected in most of the territory, mostly in the central and eastern regions. A slow to moderate northerly wind will blow, while a moderate to moderately strong northerly wind will prevail on the coast, which will reach 15-17 meters per second in gusts during the second half of the night. The air will cool down to 0, +4 degrees.

Starting from Monday morning, with the approach of an active cyclone from the southeast, the weather conditions will become even dangerous in places – heavy snowfall is expected in the western and central regions of the country and a snow cover of 5 to 8 centimeters thick will form in some places. Due to the synoptic situation, there is also a possibility of hearing some thunder locally.
A light frost and very heavy snowfall is expected on Monday evening as the temperature drops. In the evening, the yellow warning will be replaced by orange. In some places in the western and central regions, the thickness of the snow cover could reach up to 10 centimeters. Icing will form on the roads.
As the weather conditions change, in the middle of the week, along with the approach of a new precipitation zone, it will rain in many places and the snow cover will melt rapidly. In the following days, the weather conditions will become calmer, as both atmospheric pressure and air temperature will rise, in some places it will reach +15 degrees.
During the day on Tuesday, not only will the wind gradually die down, but also the precipitation will become less and less. The weather will be cool, as the air temperature will be within 0.5 degrees both in the dark and light hours of the day in most parts of the country.
In the middle of the week, the sun will break through the clouds in some places. On Wednesday, significant precipitation is not expected for most of the day, but in the west, a new precipitation zone will reach Latvia from the south, which will bring rain throughout the country, under the influence of which the snow cover formed yesterday will melt rapidly.
On Thursday, the wind will become stronger again, but towards the evening, both rain and wind gusts will gradually stop. If the night on Wednesday will be cold, with the air cooling down to -5 degrees in places, then a warmer air mass will gradually begin to flow in during the day, thus the air temperature in the middle of the week will mostly be within +3, +8 degrees.
At the end of the week, the atmospheric pressure will gradually increase, as a result of which the weather conditions will become more favorable – there will be less precipitation and the wind will not blow so strongly. The air temperature will be higher both at night and during the day – during the holidays, the thermometer could even rise above the +15 degree mark in some places.
