In Austria, for the first time since the new law came into force, a car was confiscated for speeding, the Vienna State Police announced on Tuesday, March 5. A 28-year-old driver was caught driving at 114 km/h in central Vienna at 10:30 pm on March 4. “Because he was found to be speeding more than 60 km/h in a populated area, the vehicle was temporarily impounded,” police said in a press release.
According to the new rules, which came into force on March 1, confiscation of cars threatens drivers who exceed the speed limit by 80 km/h in a populated area and by 90 km/h outside the city. One of the amendments to the road traffic law also allows for the temporary confiscation of a car if the speed is exceeded by more than 60 km/h.

Austria fights reckless drivers

In 2021, fines for traffic violations have been significantly increased in Austria. Thus, drivers who exceed the speed limit by 30 km/h face a fine of at least 150 euros. In case of repeated violations, the fine could rise to 5,000 thousand euros, warns the All-German Automobile Club (ADAC).
