If electric cars take advantage of braking to recharge the battery, why not apply the same logic to larger vehicles? This question is behind a pioneering project in Europe that is already being implemented in Barcelona – MetroCHARGE.

In this project, ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles will be powered by the energy recovered from stopping the subway cars in combination with photovoltaic solar generation.

The energy supply that will power these chargers comes from the metro catenary grid and solar panels mounted on existing roofs.

Each “column” has two 50 kW fast charging devices. Each of these devices has three connectors that can be used simultaneously, in addition to two parking spaces.

To use the MetroCHARG chargers, you will need to access the application of the network of electric stations in Barcelona. Through this application, you can activate the recharge with a maximum usage time of half an hour, one hour or two hours. Recharging prices are 30 cents per kWh.
