“A few years” of closure to restore and preserve one of the treasures of Italian heritage. In Bologna, the square surrounding one of the city’s two famous towers will have to be closed, according to an announcement from the city relayed by our colleagues from BFMTV. This tower inclined at four degrees has aroused interest and concern from several scientists due to oscillations that they describe as “abnormal”.
According to the city’s mayor, the closure of Piazza di Porta Ravegnana is now absolutely necessary for the preservation of the tower. “We are not intervening because we think it could collapse at any moment,” he reassures, “we are intervening because we want to secure it and restore it.” To do this, a metal structure will be installed to consolidate the structure of the tower.
Two emblematic towers
The Garisenda Tower is one of the two symbolic towers of the city of Bologna with its twin, the Asinelli Tower. Both bear the name of the rival families who had them built in the 12th century.

The Asinelli Tower is much higher, 97 meters, and inclined at around 1 degree, so it can be visited, unlike the one that is now being restored. The city’s mayor is taking advantage of this spotlight to announce that he intends to ask Unesco to list the two towers of Bologna as a world heritage site.
