This Sunday, festivities will take place in Brasilia, for the investiture of the new president. Lula promised “a great popular festival” with concerts, exhibitions and a gastronomic centre. But they will take place in a climate of mistrust, insecurity, and national mourning, after the death, Thursday, of “King” Pelé, symbol of national cohesion.

Few things unite Lula and Bolsonaro today, except perhaps Pelé. The two men hastened to share photos on social networks on Thursday alongside this football legend, emblem of Brazilian genius, of its diversity and of a national cohesion which seems to have disappeared today.

Pelé was also known, and sometimes criticized, for not taking a political stand. “Few Brazilians have taken our country’s name as far as he has. As different as their language is from Portuguese, foreigners from all over the world have quickly found a way to pronounce the magic word…
