The Council of Ministers has preliminarily approved a draft of Dpcm containing “Regulation concerning amendments to the Organizational Regulation of the Ministry of Culture referred to in the decree of the President of the Council of Ministers 2 December 2019, n. 169”, which carries out a first and important reorganization of the Italian state museums. With this provision, the number of museums, archaeological parks and other state cultural sites endowed with special autonomy rises from 44 to 60. In particular, there will be three new institutes of general management level: the Royal Museums of Turin, the National Archaeological Museum i Naples and the Galleria dell’Accademia–Musei del Bargello in Florence, which brings together the two structures previously of non-general management level. In addition, 17 new institutions of non-general management level are born.

In recent weeks, the reform proposal received a favorable opinion from the Superior Council for Cultural and Landscape Heritage. The preliminary draft of the draft decree will be sent to the Council of State for its opinion before final approval by the Council of Ministers. “The autonomy granted to some large museums is an operational choice that allows them to raise their quality and usability. Being autonomous means having managerial management that allows rapid decisions with a view to protecting and promoting the structures. This provision recognizes moreover, the value of great Italian cultural sites which, in fact, due to the importance of the collections and the works housed, have already gained great prominence in the field”, declared the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.
