In Colombia, the Ferraris of the narcos will help finance social reforms

by time news

Juan Jose Valencia, alias “Falcon”had luxury tastes: the great fundraiser of the Clan del Golfo, the most powerful drug cartel in Colombia, brought in around fifteen million euros each month into the cartel’s coffers, and did not hesitate to pick up them “crumbs” : at the time of his arrest, his personal fortune was estimated at some 220 million euros.

Enough to treat yourself to minor pleasures, such as this collection of thirty luxury and collector cars, three of which will be auctioned off on October 25 by the Special Activities Company (SAE), an official body responsible for managing goods seized from drug traffickers: a red 812 Superfast (2020), a white Portofino (2019) and a 488 Spider (2019).

“Falcon” seemed to prefer admiring them to driving them, as they only show between 806 and 1,717 kilometers on the clock, reports the Colombian magazine Week. No upset price has been set, but the bidders of this online sale “will have to pay a security deposit of 42,000 euros” to participate in the auction. The list price of each of the three racing cars ranges between 320,000 and 400,000 euros.

This is obviously not the first time that the SAE has auctioned off the assets of narcos, but there will be something new this year: the newly elected Colombian president, Gustavo Petro – the first left-wing president in the country’s history – has clarified that the proceeds from the sale of confiscated property would henceforth be allocated “at the service of the people”says Semana.

“It’s billions of pesos in the form of all kinds of goods: luxury apartments and houses, land, cash, jewelry, emeralds, gold, works of art. All this could have a social function”declared the president last August, before specifying that the priority would be the financing of his agrarian reform.
