It all started this summer on the island of Solta (opposite Split) with a municipal regulation recalling that it is “it is forbidden to dry clothes, sheets, rugs, tea towels and other objects likely to disfigure the appearance of the facades outside”. A minimum fine of 2,000 kuna (300 euros) threatens offenders. Other cities and islands immediately joined the anti-clothesline coalition: Rijeka, Pag, Mljet…
However, the settlement does not pass. It even sparked an outcry in the media and sparked a pro-clothesline movement on social media, awash with photos of one of Mediterranean cities’ favorite motifs.
“The prohibition of tiramoli (“clotheslines” in Dalmatian dialect, word coming from two Italian verbs: tirare/pull and molare/release, installed on the windows and tangled in the alleys) Is it a measure linked to urban planning or is it a coup de grace to Mediterranean heritage and coastal tradition?” asks himself Jutarnji List.
