“In December, almost 10,000 deaths from Covid-19 were reported to the WHO and, compared to November, there was a 42% increase in hospital admissions and a 62% increase in intensive care admissions.” This was underlined by the director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during the periodic update for the press. “Although 10,000 deaths per month are far lower” than those reported during the “peak periods of the pandemic – he specified – this level of preventable deaths is not acceptable”.

Therefore, even more so considering that the figures released “are based on data from less than 50 countries, mainly in Europe and the Americas”, while “it is certain that there are also increases in other countries and that they are not reported”, he pointed out the WHO DG, “we continue to ask governments to maintain surveillance and sequencing and to guarantee access to tests, treatments and vaccines. And we continue to invite people to get vaccinated, to undergo testing, to wear masks where necessary and to ensure that busy indoor spaces are well ventilated.”
