Toulouse made short work of FC Nantes by winning 5-1 in the Coupe de France final on Saturday 29 April. Cape Verdean Logan Costa notably contributed to his team’s success by scoring twice in the first ten minutes of the game.

It was a tense duel between FC Nantes and Toulouse in the 106th Coupe de France final, this Saturday, April 29. Sporting tension, of course, since Nantes was playing the 10th final in its history in the competition, with a 5th coronation in sight and a new double in case of victory. For its part, Toulouse hoped to register a second title on its list, after that of 1957, and put an end to a 66-year drought. But social and security tension also, in a context of contestation of the pension reform which prompted President Emmanuel Macron to give up entering the lawn before the start of the meeting.

Faced with Nantes who seemed paralyzed by the event, the Toulousains were extremely realistic from the start of the meeting by inflicting three goals on the Canaries. It was first the Cape Verdean Logan Costa who opened the scoring by taking a corner with a header (4th, 0-1), before scoring a double in the same way in stride (10th, 0 -2). Nantes thought they were closing the gap thanks to the Egyptian Mostafa Mohamed, but their recovery was narrowly saved on the goal line by Gabriel Suazo (12th).

Suffering on each Toulouse attempt, FC Nantes was then punished once again by Thijs Dallinga (23rd, 0-3), who stung his ball perfectly to deceive Alban Lafont. Completely overwhelmed by the intensity applied by the Toulousains, Nantes’ nightmare continued in the first period after a ball badly pushed back in the middle by the Nantes goalkeeper, allowing Dallinga to in turn offer himself a double (31st , 0-4).

A one-sided final

After a catastrophic first period and a coronation which already seemed acquired for the Toulouse, the supporters of the Canaries could at least hope for a reaction of pride from their team. But the Nantes people never seemed close to finding the solution against opponents who logically managed their efforts more. Moussa Sissoko could have reduced the score, but his recovery, completely unscrewed, passed well above the cage of Kjetil Haug (57th).

Powerless in the game, Nantes finally got a penalty thanks to Fabien Centonze, tackled dangerously by Rasmus Nicolaisen. Nantes captain Ludovic Blas then did not tremble in front of goal by placing his shot perfectly under the bar (75th, 1-4). A goal that did not weigh in the outcome of this final, since the Moroccan Zakaria Aboukhlal then finished the Nantes with a shot from the right, deflected by Jean-Charles Castelletto to find the nets of Lafont (79th, 1-5 ).

With four goals scored in the first period, an unprecedented score in a Coupe de France final since 1955, Toulouse already had both hands on the trophy. They won the second Coupe de France in their history, after a first coronation in 1957.
