As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, thousands of tourists from these two countries are stranded in major Egyptian seaside resorts like Sharm El-Sheikh, their favorite destination, says the New York Times.

In the weeks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, thousands of Russian and Ukrainian tourists “got stuck together” under the sun of the seaside resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on the shores of the Red Sea, writes The New York Times, which recounts this forced cohabitation.

At the time of the invasion, there were around 11,000 Ukrainian nationals in Sharm El-Sheikh, and another 9,000 in Hurghada, Egypt’s other major resort on the Red Sea. If the precise number of Russian citizens in the same place is unknown, it probably amounts to several tens of thousands of people. Although these numbers have dropped since evacuation flights to Europe were put in place, the New York Times describes a situation that few had imagined: “Unable to go home, and avoid each other at the breakfast buffet” in the hotel complexes of the city, these tourists lived days “full of tension, aggression and fear”, reports the American daily.
