In El Poblado, a large-format electric vehicle charging station

by time news

The electric vehicle charging station at the San Fernando Plaza Business Center is the first large-scale one in Medellín. It has 19 chargers and the same number of cells. It is open to the public and works for all car brands. Located in the parking lot, it is not only the largest in the city, but also in Colombia, so far.

There, vehicles can literally sleep while they replenish themselves, by slow charging. Clearly, it will be difficult to find this platform of 19 chargers full. At least, in the next two years, it will never be full at the same time, according to the projection of the number of electric vehicles in Medellín. By 2023, there will be more than 850 electric vehicles registered in the city.

50 KW

They cost $60,000, $1,400 for each KW; plus a $1,400 service surcharge.

According to Juan Felipe Ocampo, experience leader at Voltop, users spend an average of 1.5 to 2 hours charging their vehicles at the electric charging station at the San Fernando Plaza Business Center. However, there is the option of charging for longer periods of time, for example, overnight, for approximately 4 to 6 hours.

To better understand this concept, it is worth clarifying that there are two types of worlds for electric charging: AC charging, which is the power current service that we all have in our homes (some charging stations also have this option, as is the case with all EPM charging stations); and DC charging, which means direct current; this is the service provided at electric vehicle charging stations.

For Juan Felipe Ocampo, there are few direct current stations in Colombia. In Medellín, EPM, Celsia and Voltop are the operators of 12 of the stations of this type located in the territory.

“This is an interesting option,” Ocampo added, because today there is a difficulty in charging vehicles at home. This is a headache for taxi drivers, for example. First, because it is difficult to find stations in residential units or neighborhoods. Second, the costs of this service are high. Third, because this user may use a rented home, and will not make the investment in a charger of this type. Fourth, most of these vehicles have to be left parked outside homes or in public parking lots, and so it is difficult to charge them overnight.

In the case of Julián Rojas, the electric vehicle charging station at the San Fernando Plaza Business Center became a “relief.” He is the driver of a white-plate vehicle that offers passenger transportation service to the José María Córdova airport in Rionegro, eastern Antioquia.

“I literally leave my vehicle at night, at the end of the day, and go home to rest. I pick it up at dawn, I’m ‘ready’ to work, and I can operate all day long,” he said.

So, the San Fernando Plaza Business Center is one more on the list of vehicle charging stations in Medellín; in the heart of El Poblado, and in a large format.
