In front of her children: She was baptized in a traditional ceremony – and drowned

by time news

A woman and mother, in her 40s, were documented jumping into an impromptu pool in the Ordes River near St. Petersburg before disappearing beneath the ice sheet. In a video that has since been uploaded to social media, a person can be seen jumping after her into the frozen river water, but rising back to take air without any sign of the mother. Meanwhile, one of her children can be heard calling his mother in terror and shouting: “No! No!”. Watch a video from the tragic event: * Hard to watch *

The incident occurred during the Christian Feast of Revelation, which commemorates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. During the holiday, Orthodox Christians from Eastern Europe and Russia practice dipping in natural water sources since according to tradition, cold water has special healing properties. As for the waters of the Ordz River, it has since been reported that their temperature stands at minus 5 degrees at this time of year.

Rescue crews were called to the scene and began searching for the mother, but as of this moment her body has not yet been located. Alexander Zuiev, director of the local rescue services, referred to the tragedy and held that the woman had probably drowned or suffered from cerebral ischemia (lack of blood to the brain) as a result of narrowing of the arteries.

Zayev sharply criticized those responsible for the immersion pool and said it was built negligently, with no bottom and no ambulance crew on site. Beyond that, he claimed the pool was built in an area where the currents of the river are very strong.

“The woman jumped into the water in an area where there is no light source or rescue crews,” Zavev added. “The Oradz River is among the most dangerous in the area. People drown in it every year, even in the summer months. In my estimation, the woman was found dead underwater and then swept downstream.”
