This is the largest environmental project that has been completed in recent years, with a budget of 20 million euros, while it is completed, in addition to the modernization of the old biological, with the installation of solar drying of sewage sludge, amounting to approximately 10 million euros.
The project to expand and modernize the biorefinery has gone through 40 waves since the process started in 2013, was tendered after legal objections and delays in 2021 and is now ready to operate. In total, the biological treatment facilities will be able to serve an equivalent population of 220,000 – 240,000 inhabitants.
“Thanks to the planning of our Municipal Authority in the period 2014-2019 and the strong political and technocratic assertion of funding that resulted in its approval, the time has come for the operation of the great project of DEYAI. We are talking about a landmark intervention for the city and the entire basin. An intervention that we had as a top priority on our agenda since our previous term and we managed, despite the many obstacles and difficulties, to put it into practice, fighting to secure its funding, which was a huge backlog that was plaguing the municipality and TWO. This project went through fire and iron and reached the razor’s edge many times until its funding was secured in the period 2014-2019. With strong political will and a clear plan, however, we succeeded and soon we are shielding our Lake to a very large extent and the entire basin, upgrading the quality of life of our residents with a strong, quality, environmental footprint that this Municipal Authority leaves as a legacy” , Mayor Thomas Begas notes in his statement.
The full environmental benefits for the area, with the completion of the remaining projects, will be seen in about two years. For now, in the next few days, invitations will be made for new connections, from settlements that have not yet been connected to biological cleaning, as it was made known by the president of DEYAI Giorgos Papadiotis, who visited the new facilities together with the members of the Board of Directors of the Company, officials of DEVIAI, the representative of the contracting company “Mesogios S.A.” Vassilis Stamos and the representative of the Japanese company that produces the special films used, Takahiro Suzuki.
“For the next few years, the basin as a whole, and especially our lake, will be almost completely protected, in combination with the other major projects implemented by DEYAI in previous years”, Mr. Papadiotis emphasized, adding that the start is planned for June of the normal operation of the new unit.
The project manager and representative of the contractor company Vassilis Stamos, who guided the attendees around the facilities, spoke about a project of great environmental importance. “In 1.5 to 2 years it will be a jewel for the city”, emphasized Mr. Stamos, who 36 years ago, during the tenure of F. Filios, built the first tertiary biological purification of Ioannina. “I am now completing my career with this project and I will be proud of it,” he noted.
Mr. Suzuki also expressed his joy for the project that is in progress and will bring about a significant environmental footprint.
In fact, the effluents of the biological cleaning will be utilized in the first phase for the irrigation of the surrounding area, while the remaining quantities will be directed to Kalamas, which is the natural recipient, without excluding their future full utilization. It is worth noting that after quaternary treatment this water could be drinkable.
New connections in the municipalities of Ioannina and Zitsa
According to the approved environmental conditions of the installation, with the completion of the sewerage network infrastructure, the urban wastewater from the areas of the Strategic Urban Wastewater Management Plan of the Prefecture of Ioannina will be able to be directed to the new unit.
This is the urban wastewater of the city of Ioannina and the settlements of Stavraki, Exohi, Ammos Marmara, Kato Marmara, Kardamitsia, Olympiada, Tsiflikopoulos, Neochoropoulos, Kato Neochoropoulos, Drosia-Pendelis and the area of the earthquake-affected areas of the Lagatsi stream basin of the D.E. . Ioanniton, the settlements of Anatoli, Nisos, Pedini, Katsika, Perama, Amphithea, Krya, Ag. Marina, as well as Eleousa of the Municipality of Zitsa, Also, the sewage of the wider service area of the facility and the liquid waste of the industrial – industrial units of BI.PE. of Ioannina, after appropriate pretreatment.
The planning and programming of DEYAI includes a series of settlements that are going to be connected and they are the settlements of Vasiliki, Drosohori, Kastritsis, Koutseli, Logkadon, Mouzakaia, Iliokali, Platania of D.E. Pamvotidos, and the settlements of Bafras and Neokaisarea of the Municipality of Ioannito, as well as the settlements of Ag. Ioannou, Vounoplagia, Zoodochos, Rodotopi and Gardiki of the Municipality of Zitsa.
