On Friday, August 11, an archaeological find and its discoverer, a nine-year-old boy, were presented in Bremen. The find in question is a Roman silver coin: a denarius from the time of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 161 to 180.

An unusual find for Bremen

“For Bremen, this find is of particular value,” said Uta Halle, head of the Bremen Archaeological Office.

In addition to historical value, it is unique in that it was discovered outside the territories that were under the rule of the Roman Empire. The boy found the coin in the summer of 2022 in Bremen-Arstein while playing on the playground with his classmates in the afterschool group. The age of the archaeological find can reach 1800 years.

Schoolboy Bjarne first took the coin home, and then, after some time, turned to the city’s archeological experts.
