Disciplinary checks are being carried out against at least 400 police officers in various German states on suspicion of holding right-wing extremist views and believing in conspiracy theories. This was reported by Stern magazine with reference to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the German states, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
According to the publication, the actual number of such law enforcement officers is likely to be much higher, since four federal states – Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen and Thuringia – did not provide up-to-date information. “Police officers who do not rely on the constitution, but instead share extremist views, pose a great danger to democracy and the rule of law,” North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul told Stern. He believes that such employees have no place in the police.
Bundestag Police Commissioner Ueli Grötsch (SPD) noted that “the danger for the entire country is greater than ever before.” “Hence, for the police,” he warned.
The German Ministry of the Interior published a report for 2022. It shows that 327 employees were prosecuted over three years due to obvious links to right-wing extremism or the Citizens of the Reich (Reichsburger) movement.
