The war in Ukraine and the concomitant surge in energy prices continue to break taboos in Germany. A new demonstration of this was made on Monday with the acceptance by the German Greens to extend, if necessary, the life of nuclear power plants beyond December 31, 2022. This deadline, linked to the abandonment of the sector, had been decided by Chancellor Angela Merkel in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster in Japan (2011), and confirmed last fall in the coalition contract. Ten years later, the cards are reshuffled.
The announcement was made on Monday evening by the environmental leader of the coalition and Minister of Economy and Climate, Robert Habeck, whose Grünen party is genetically hostile to the atom. The strong man of the government has attached conditions capable of winning the consent of the base of the party.
