Germany has recorded a new peak in the spread of coronavirus. The infection rate of SARS-CoV-2 in Germany, as of Tuesday morning, January 18, increased to 553.2 per hundred thousand population, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported. Just the day before, this figure was 528.2, and a week earlier – 387.9.

Over the past day, 74,405 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in the country (45,690 a week earlier). For the entire duration of the pandemic in Germany, according to official figures, SARS-CoV-2 has already infected 8,074,527 people. The actual number of infections, however, should be much higher, as many cases remain unrecognized.

COVID-19 deaths are on the decline

At the same time, the death rate from covid in Germany is declining. Over the past day, 193 deaths have been registered in the country. A week earlier, there were 322. During the entire period of the pandemic, 115,842 people have already become victims of covid in Germany.

The workload of intensive care units in German clinics has also decreased – one of the most important indicators on the basis of which anti-coronavirus restrictions are tightened or weakened in Germany.

According to the latest data, this ratio has dropped to 3.14 per hundred thousand of the population. Only a day earlier it was 3.24.
