In Germany, the country’s average coronavirus infection rate has exceeded 800 per 100,000 population. As of Sunday morning, January 23, the seven-day infection rate jumped to 806.8, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said. A day earlier, this figure was 772.7, and a week ago – 515.7 per hundred thousand of the population (in December – 220.7).

Over the past day in Germany, 85,440 cases of infection were detected (a week earlier – 52,504). Weekend rates are usually lower due to data transfer delays to RKI. Over the past 24 hours, 54 new deaths have also been recorded in the country (47 a week earlier). In general, during the entire period of the pandemic in Germany, 116,718 people have already died from coronavirus, the number of infected has reached 8,681,447.

The load factor of intensive care units – the most important criterion for strengthening or weakening anti-coronavirus restrictions in Germany – increased last Friday to 3.77 per hundred thousand of the population (3.56 a day earlier). The figures are not published on weekends.

New conference on coronavirus

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the prime ministers of the federal states will hold a new conference on January 24 to discuss next steps in the fight against coronavirus. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has repeatedly spoken out in favor of maintaining the current restrictions.

The Council of Experts under the German government supports this line, but at the same time calls for preparations for the further growth of coronavirus infection.
