Time.news – In Greece the heat doesn’t let up. The weekend, that citizens and tourists are preparing to experience, it could be the hottest in the last 50 years for the month of July. Government representatives have therefore advised people to work from home where possible and not to venture outside unnecessarily.

The exceptional temperatures also mean that the major tourist sites will be closed during the hottest part of the day. “This weekend is likely to be the hottest July on record in 50 years‘said Panagiotis Giannopoulos, meteorologist at state broadcaster ERT. ‘Athens will have temperatures above 40 degrees for six or seven daysi, until the end of the month”. The Acropolis of Athens and other architectural attractions will be closed during the hottest hours.

The central region of Thessaly could touch 45 degrees. Yannis Kallianos, meteorologist at private broadcaster Mega, spoke of an “endless and powerful heat wave”. “According to the latest forecasts, the heat wave could last until next Thursday or Friday,” he warned, adding that strong northerly winds could also trigger fires. Authorities, meanwhile, said firefighters had to deal with 79 bushfires across the country, with their spokesman Vassilios Vathrakoyannis saying Greece would be on high alert throughout the weekend.
