The visit was purely political and lasted less than twenty-four hours. Tuesday, September 5, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin responded to the invitation of the deputies of the Freedoms, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group which was making its parliamentary return to Guadeloupe. “We wanted the real overseas minister”mock several LIOT deputies, when mentioning Philippe Vigier, current Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories, but above all founder of the group he left to join the presidential allies. “We would not have understood that Gérald Darmanin did not come”notes Olivier Serva, deputy (LIOT) of the first constituency of Guadeloupe, very proud of “the very first parliamentary return to overseas since 1794”.

At LIOT, we are very aware of the weight that the group of 21 deputies weighs in the eyes of a government seeking a majority in the National Assembly. In March, the cross-partisan motion of censure on the pension reform he had tabled almost brought him down, by nine votes. “If by responding to our invitation it was a question of seducing us, it is a minimum of common senseassumes Bertrand Pancher, deputy of the Meuse and president of the group, during a press conference closing the meeting between the minister and a good dozen deputies. We, we only ask to work in good conditions with the presidential minority. »

And the conditions seemed met on Tuesday. In particular because of the bonds of friendship that Mr. Darmanin maintains with certain members of the group, woven in other chapters of their political life. On the side of the Minister of the Interior, we also evoke a desire for discussion, to bring the democratic debate to life, to put a little empathy, even emotion, into it. “There is no truth in the majority and debility in what the oppositions say”, said Gérald Darmanin. To secure allies? “He is a politician, he does politics, he weaves compromises”replies Bertrand Pancher, recalling that the method has however been little tested by the government since the beginning of the five-year term.

“We are waiting to see”

If the overseas issues, the constitutional revision and the autonomy tendencies of the territories were mentioned, the debates also focused on the immigration bill which must return to a session in the Senate. “probably in November”according to Mr. Darmanin, while the government is still seeking a majority on the text. “The bill presented by the government seems balanced to us, and we hope that it will remain so”approved Bertrand Pancher, although the other agreements which will be found, on the right in particular, could restore combativeness to this parliamentary group.
