Of the three salons owned by Sandrine, only one hires three employees, in Troyes (Aube). The second, in the same city, had to close for lack of manpower. The last is located in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes). She manages it alone. Since the Covid, she finds that she has “great difficulties in recruiting”. According to her, mentalities have changed since the advent of telework and flexibility.

“Today, we are asked for two free weekends a month, which was not envisaged before the crisis,” she says. Her business was full every weekend, and she refused to limit the number of hands available to work on Saturdays. After the departure of its last employee, this second Trojan salon had to close. Should this be seen as an explanation for the increase in the number of hair salon bankruptcies?

The competition is tough

The business manager fears that she will no longer be able to recruit in the face of large franchises, which offer shifts on rest days and higher remuneration. To attract employees, the Provalliance group (Franck Provost, Jean Louis David or even Coiff&Co) does not hesitate to offer a bonus of 1,000 euros to each new hire. An offer that Sandrine cannot afford.

For Pascal, hairdresser in Paris, all these factors mean that “the balance of power has changed” between employer and employees. The latter no longer hesitate to “resign” when professionals are tempted by microenterprise. Today, half of the hairdressers work alone without employees. And a quarter of them do their hair at home, according to the Union of Independents (SDI).

Nina, a hairdresser in the center of Paris who is about to close her salon, is now thinking about a professional format with “fewer constraints”. “The future is surely to make premises shared between several autoentrepreneurs, who will be able to share the costs” while continuing to manage their time and their remuneration, she projects.
