In Helmond, the allotment garden must be closed due to PFASn

by time news

The municipality thinks differently here and will close the complex on Monday.

Daling PFAS

“This was founded 47 years ago as a vegetable garden association by the CPN,” says chairman Jos Henraat. But next Monday the lock will be closed, and not everyone is happy about that.

Many want more research done. “We have seen a decrease,” says Henraat. “In 2018, the amount of PFAS was very high, but in 2021 research was done again and there was a decrease of more than 60 percent.”

Healthy soil

Unfortunately, the damage has already been done, says another. “People are already packing.” Some of them don’t even think it’s a big problem that the vegetable garden is closed, because they think it’s good to get ‘healthier soil’ in return.”

“But then it is still not really healthy,” says Henraat about the municipality’s plan to lay new ground there. “It will take some time before vegetables can be grown on it again.”

Deep hole

“We have thrown our whole soul and salvation into it down to the last penny, and now that is being broken off,” says Henraat with sadness in his voice. “I don’t want money from the municipality, I want my hard-earned work back.”

He doesn’t know what he’s going to do now, he says. “I’m falling into a very deep hole.”
