In response to an official invitation from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, at the head of a high-ranking delegation, on a 3-day visit.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani received Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to the official Iraqi News Agency.

The Iranian News Agency “IRNA” reported that “Bezeshkian” will hold “official bilateral meetings with senior Iraqi officials in Baghdad, and the two countries will sign cooperation documents and security memoranda.”

He pointed out that “Bezeshkian” will also hold meetings with Iranians in Iraq and with businessmen, and will visit Najaf, Karbala and Basra.

Pezeshkian’s visit to Iraq is his first foreign visit since his election on July 28. He pledged to give priority to strengthening relations with neighboring countries, saying: “Relations with neighboring countries can neutralize a great deal of the pressure resulting from sanctions.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said a few days ago: “This trip will be an opportunity to strengthen and deepen friendly and brotherly relations between the two countries in various fields.”
