/ The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, confirmed on Sunday that the widow of prominent Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny (47 years old), who was declared dead in prison, will be welcomed tomorrow at a meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council.

“I will welcome Yulia Navalnaya to the EU Foreign Affairs Council, and EU ministers will send a strong message of support to those fighting for freedom in Russia,” Borrell said in a statement on the X platform, followed by Agency, adding that “Navalny’s memory will be honored.”

Navalny’s death sparked a wave of condemnation in Western countries, which held Russia responsible, while the Kremlin remained silent about the incident.

Despite the harsh crackdown and warnings, hundreds of Russians took part in small rallies in several cities to honour Navalny, the Kremlin’s most vocal critic who was declared dead in a detention centre in Russia’s Arctic region.

Russian authorities arrested more than 400 people on Friday and Saturday during rallies in 36 cities, especially St. Petersburg and Moscow, according to the non-governmental human rights organization OVD-Info.
