In Iran, the “medieval” return to street executions

by time news

Iran carried out a public execution on Saturday July 23, the first in two years, several media report, including Independent Persian, citing a report by the Iranian Human Rights Organization based in Norway.

Iman Sabzikar, 28, was hanged in public on Saturday morning after being charged with the murder in early February of a police officer in the southern city of Shiraz, claims Independent Persian.

The Organization denounced an act “medieval”saying he was worried about the worsening repression in the country.

Iran is the second country in the world after China to use the most capital punishment; in 2020, 246 people were executed there, according to Amnesty International.

The last public execution took place in June 2009, according to the Iranian human rights organization.

According to the NGO, four other men, also sentenced to death for killing police officers, now face the same fate.

“The sole purpose of public execution is to intimidate people. Iranian civil society, human rights activists and the international community must fight to ensure that this punishment does not return to the streets of Iran”, launched a user.
