In June, China imported 1,346 tons of pork products from Russia (870.27 tons of frozen meat and 475.83 tons of frozen offal), which is four times more than the amount in May, according to data from the General Administration of Customs, cited by “Radio China”.

After a long pause of 15 years due to African swine fever, in September 2023 China lifted the ban on imports of Russian pork meat and offal.

Russian pork exports to China could reach 15,000 tons in 2024 or even as high as 100,000 tons, Russian news portal Sputnik reported, citing the head of Russia’s agricultural regulator, Sergey Dankvert.

The increase in imports from Russia comes as China conducts an anti-dumping investigation into EU pork imports.

According to Chinese analysts, the rapid increase in pork imports from Russia is positive news as it will help the country diversify its sources amid efforts to increase its food security.

China currently imports pork from 21 countries, with an estimated import volume of $3.5 billion in 2023, with half from the EU. The largest exporter is Spain, which accounts for 25% of China’s pork and product imports, totaling $865.3 million.
