In this exhibition, the artist shows the infinitely large in the infinitely small, according to his son, Pierre Brihat: “Showing what we don’t necessarily see, what is so obvious that we walk on it, a blade of grass, a small flower. These are the little things that we often miss. These are photographic paintings.

Denis Brihat, aged 95, is renowned for his creative vision and his know-how in film photography. For over fifty years, his work has been exhibited around the world. Known for his rigor and visual lyricism, he is also one of the founders of the Rencontres d’Arles.

Black and white prints become colorful

His photographs, which resemble still life paintings, demonstrate an art of simplicity and composition. However, originally, these silver prints were in black and white. But Denis Brihat used a technique linked to film to develop certain colors.

These are black and white prints and then via metal toning techniques they become colored. Each metal has its own color when it reacts with the silver in the photographic paper. This red is a turn to gold, the onions are selenium“, explains Pierre Brihat. The exhibition is on view until January 27, 2024.
