Nottingham Forest qualified for the final against Huddersfield at the end of a penalty shootout and as soon as the drama ended thousands of fans burst onto the pitch, but TV footage documented a fan running towards Sharp, who had previously played for Nottingham, and attacking him violently.

Sharp needed stitches in his face as part of the medical treatment he received immediately after being beaten, and in a post he posted to social media he wrote: “One idiot ruined a wonderful evening of football. As a Nottingham Forest player in the past I congratulate the club on the victory

Nottingham Forest announced immediately after the incident that the attacking fan, Robert Biggs by name, was suspended from the team games for life.
