Slowly, a crane flies over the Thames and lowers us to a depth of 45 meters on the left bank of the river. Do not be dizzy, we warn. Once on the ground, we find ourselves in the heart of a giant concrete tunnel in Battersea, in central west London. Dug in chalk, the Tideway Tunnel is 7.2 m wide and 25 km long. Imagine it zigzagging downhill through the depths of the Thames, from Acton Reservoir in the west to Beckton Wastewater Treatment Plant in the east. On the walls, a temporary exhibition testifies to the environmental purpose of the project in the middle of plants and to the sound of fake bird noises.
