In Lyon, controversy around a socialist assistant, accused of having rented “a hovel”

by time news

Assistant to the ecologist mayor of Lyon, the elected socialist Sandrine Runel, is caught in the turmoil. The municipal right is demanding his resignation, accusing neither more nor less the assistant for solidarity and social inclusion of behaving in “sleep merchant”. “I made administrative errors in the lease, I readily admit it, I should have entrusted the management to a management company, speeded up the work that was planned, but the vocabulary used is odious, the political exploitation is completely disproportionate” , says Sandrine Runel, livid, upset by the controversy over the state of an apartment she rents.

Often at the forefront in the fight against homelessness and unfit housing, the leader of the Lyon socialists emerges weakened from this sequence projecting private life unceremoniously into the public sphere. The next city council promises to be lively, Thursday, January 19. The elected official enjoys the support of the mayor of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV) Grégory Doucet, but also of opposition personalities, former socialists and macronists, such as David Kimelfeld, or Yann Cucherat, close to Gérard Collomb. Opposite, the right intends to rub the knife in the wound. “Sandrine Runel spends her days doing great lessons that she does not apply”, accuses Pierre Oliver (Les Républicains, LR), president of the Lyon right-wing group.

In April 2022, Sandrine Runel rented a furnished 49 m apartment to a young single woman.2, which she acquired in 2007, shortly after arriving in Lyon. The monthly rent of 650 euros, charges included, is in the upper range of the 7e arrondissement, consistent with the character of the accommodation, with wooden floors and exposed beams. The elected official ordered work to repair the damage caused by the previous tenant. After several repairs, the tenant reports the fragility of the front door, the persistence of mold, and especially the presence of mice, requiring new work, especially since she is raising a newborn baby alone.

“I recognize mistakes”

Tired of reviving her owner, the 30-year-old suddenly decides to expose everything to the local press, photos of the walls and mouse holes in support. “She rents a hovel”headlines the magazine Lyonmagon January 3, followed by Progress, which screens the irregularities of the lease, without thermal diagnosis, written from a model recovered on the Internet. Feeling slandered, Sandrine Runel plays on transparency, details the progress of the work envisaged. “Elected as I am, I have no privilege to bring in the craftsmen more quickly”she defends herself. “I recognize errors, but was the violence of the media trial essential after only eight months of rental? », asks the assistant.
