Mexico ranks second among the countries in which breastfeeding is least practiced. Only 18 percent of women do it, while globally 45% of women do it. That is why it is important to promote this practice at the national level, as María del Carmen Aguirre García and Ana Elena Limón Roas, from the UNAM Faculty of Medicine, have pointed out.

It is advisable to “breastfeed the baby from six months to two years, since human milk offers an important nutritional contribution, contains antibodies and active substances that promote good digestion and prevent colic”, as Carmen Aguirre stated.

Through breastfeeding, a healthy bond between mother and baby is established.

Likewise, it should be encouraged that, through the lactation, a healthy attachment is established between mom and her little one. Thanks to this, minors gain security and the ability to set limits.

Also, breastfeeding helps the uterus to return to its original shape, reduces bleeding, gives greater mobility of fat (which is equivalent to more weight loss), decreases the probability of suffering from type II diabetes and reduces cardiovascular risks.

Myths about this practice must be disproved

What all these benefits make clear is that it is necessary to promote strategies in favor of breastfeeding, which must come from academia as well as from health professionals and workplaces. This activity should not be promoted only during Breastfeeding Week but every day.

That is why it has been suggested to create a National Breastfeeding Plan that offers more information on the subject and disproves myths such as anger, using antibiotics or being scared as obstacles to breastfeeding.
