The deepest-blue-hole-in-the-world-mexicos-taam-ja-blue-hole-reveals-secrets/” title=”The Deepest Blue Hole in the World: Mexico's Taam Ja' Blue Hole Reveals Secrets”>blue hole of Taam Ja’, located in Mexico in the Chetumal Bay, exceeds 420 meters below sea level and is therefore positioned as the deepest geological structure of this type in the world. This is what emerges from a study published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.
The measurements took place on 6 and 13 December 2023 using a CTD probe in the sinkhole located in the Manatí Sanctuary Natural Protected Area, 19.2 km from the city of Chetumal, capital of the State of Quintana Roo. Despite using technologically advanced tools, it was not possible to reach the bottom.
Blue holes are underwater basins, the formation of which is due to chemical processes exerted by water on limestone rocks that occurred when the sea level was considerably lower, as in the Pleistocene. Inside them, oases flourish where corals, sponges, molluscs, sea turtles, sharks and many other species establish their habitat, adding an incalculable value to marine biodiversity.
