Tribute to the black faces

Jacky Locks’ rock opera is a fiction inspired by coal mines, a significant subject in Moselle. The show pays tribute to the miners who shaped the history of this territory. “My grandparents and my great-grandparents came from Eastern countries, it was the wave of immigration who came to work in the mine in Lorraine, so for us it’s in our veins, it’s part of our history, telling it is extremely important”, says Damien Blanchot, soloist and production director.

On stage, the two-hour rock opera brings together 120 choristers and 10 soloists as well as a symphony orchestra and a rhythm orchestra. The artists offer an immersive musical show filled with action and suspense. Between musicians and actors, everyone must find their place. “What a pleasure, it’s a genre that I love, it’s a bit of a change from the classic and frankly it’s gripping”, assures violinist Dominique Lendormy.

A visionary spectacle

In addition to the Moselle mining basins, the show also addresses current subjects such as ecological transition or new technologies. The story Lamps in the night takes its starting point in the future. The mines have long since closed and are part of a bygone, distant era.

The former Wendel well site will be put up for sale. An entrepreneur interested in converting it into a data storage center will be propelled into a time portal. He will travel between the past where hard work mixes with fraternity and an imaginary future where mines are transformed into collective housing, places of exchange and culture.

Other “Lamps in the Night” dates are scheduled in the Lorraine region. In Freyming-Merlebach (Le Gouvy) on January 13 and 14 and in St Avold (Pierre Messmer-CAC Cultural Center) on January 21 and 22, 2024.
