A 14-year-old North Korean student has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for watching 5 minutes of South Korean cinema.

All cultural goods from other ‘hostile’ countries, including South Korea and the United States, have been banned in North Korea.

The student was arrested while watching a movie at an elementary and middle school hall in Heisen City, according to a local news agency.

Anyone who has seen, heard, or possessed South Korean films, recordings, collections, books, songs, paintings and photographs directly ‘will be sentenced to more than five years and less than 15 years.

Earlier, the US news agency Radio Free Asia reported that students in North Korea had been severely punished for watching the popular Netflix show Squid game.
