The Occitanie Region has just unveiled a digital application to facilitate access to TER, pay less for travel and above all to retain residents with the train. “Thanks to geolocation, the application is able to locate you in the station where you are. From the moment you board a train, it detects you until the moment you get off. You no longer have to buy the ticket. The journey is billed to you when the trip is consumed, ”explains Philippe Bru, the Occitanie regional director of the SNCF.

He himself seems to be enthusiastic about this new way of taking the train, “with a little push on the smartphone”. “It’s a completely unique revolution in France,” he says. Beyond the magical nature of this trip without reservation or ticket, the formula, enigmatically baptized “+ = flex” (plus equals flex) above all saves money while travelling. Because, from the moment you have, over two consecutive months, taken the train at least twenty times, the application sets up a pot that allows you to pay much less for subsequent trips, for ticket savings of between 20% and 90%, for those “addicted” to rail travel on the liO regional network

“It’s a way of rewarding those who play the train game, who abandon their car and also to increase the purchasing power of users since they spend much less on their mobility. Expenses are capped at €90 per month, half of which is paid by the company for the employees. The more you travel the less it costs, ”says Jean Luc Gibelin, vice-president of the Occitanie Region in charge of transport.

Already tickets at 1 € the first weekend of the month

Carole Delga, the PS president, and the elected communist from Gard have set themselves the goal of reaching 100,000 travelers a day on the regional TERs, these famous daily trains and weekend discovery tours of the region, which offer already tickets at 1€ the first Saturdays and Sundays of each month. “We are already on a very strong increase in attendance: + 30% between 2019 and 2022. And in 2023, the development is even faster”, continues Jean Luc Gibelin.

The new digital system will be in place on August 1 for people aged 27 to 59. The youngest and the oldest are already served by a loyalty system. But train travel enthusiasts are already invited to download the free “FAIRTIQ rouge” application from the Apple store or Playstore, create an account and simulate the journeys to assess the price. For the famous weekends at the beginning of the month at €1 per passenger seat, the leaders of the liO regional network still advise operating in the old fashioned way, by reserving one’s place. So as not to stay at the quay.
