Since Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, arson and other types of attacks on railway infrastructure and military facilities have become more frequent in Russia, and Russian courts have often sentenced those accused in these cases to harsh sentences.

A military court in the Siberian city of Chita announced that it had convicted 13 men of 13 acts of sabotage. The attacks were directed against strategically important transport infrastructure objects and energy objects.

The court claims that the defendants acted with the aim of undermining Russia’s economic security and defense capabilities and to get Russia to stop the war against Ukraine.

The defendants were sentenced to between four and 23 years in prison.

The court claims that 12 defendants belonged to a criminal group led by an unidentified person, while one was an accomplice. The court noted that the group also intended to set Russian fighter jets on fire at a military base in the Far East.
