The court also banned Mihailov from engaging in journalism and publishing, as well as website administration, for four years.

The prosecutor’s office demanded nine years in prison for the publisher of “Listok”. Mihailov has not admitted his guilt.

The reason for initiating the criminal case was the publication on the website of “Listok” about the killing of civilians in Buch and the posts on the channel of “Telegram” publication about the destruction of the hospital and drama theater in Mariupol.

Mihailov was detained in April 2022.

In his last words, Mikhailov called his criminal case “just a small episode in a huge dispute, a huge conflict that has been going on for decades.”

As the publisher of “Listok” said, the road to “the terrible situation we are in now” began with the annexation of Crimea.

Not long after the repeated invasion of Ukraine, amendments to the criminal code entered into force in Russia, which provide for up to 15 years in prison for spreading “fake news” and “discrediting” the army.

The Russian authorities have declared as fake news any information that reveals the war crimes committed in Ukraine, the killing of civilians, the losses suffered by Russians and the resistance of the Ukrainian people to the invaders.

In Russia for a long time it was even forbidden to call the war launched against Ukraine a war or an invasion or any other suitable name. All the media were forced to use the euphemism imposed by the Kremlin – “special operation”.
