In Russia announced the development of an implant to restore vision

by time news

Specialists of the So-Unity Foundation for the Support of the Deaf-Blind and the Sensor-Tech laboratory announced at the SPIEF the creation of an ELVIS brain implant that will help restore vision to blind and deaf-blind people.

The implant allows you to “connect” cameras to the human brain and transmit an image to it directly, without the help of the eyes. The implant is installed in the area of the brain, which is responsible for vision, and stimulates it with small currents. This is how a person begins to see flashes of light. The patient should wear a hoop with two cameras on his head, which will act as the eyes and read the image in real time. The patient attaches a microcomputer to his belt, which will analyze the image from the cameras, highlight the contours of important objects and transmit the frames to the implant in the brain.

“The synchronous operation of the three ELVIS components allows a person to begin to see the world around him – to confidently distinguish the silhouettes of objects and people, to understand where and what is. The technology will be effective for those blind and deaf-blind people who have retinal damage, optic nerve pathology or other severe visual impairments, ”the report says.

Now the components of the system are being tested on rodents, then trials on monkeys are planned. In 2023, the developers are planning research on ten blind volunteers. The report says that operations to install the implant will become widely available from 2027 in Russia, then in other countries.
