The number of self-employed and individual entrepreneurs in Russia has become equal, the head of the Federal Tax Service (FTS) Daniil Egorov said in an interview with RBC.

“More than 3.5 million people are self-employed. We also have about 3.5 million individual entrepreneurs. The tax regime is a status. An individual entrepreneur can also be self-employed. But for the sake of meaning it is still important, “- explained Egorov.

According to the department, as of November 1, 3.54 million individual entrepreneurs were registered in Russia. At the end of 2020, there were 1.6 million self-employed people in Russia, therefore, their number has doubled over the year.

On November 20, Alexander Kalinin, president of the all-Russian public organization of small and medium-sized businesses “Support of Russia”, said that due to the restrictions introduced to combat the coronavirus, the number of economic entities decreased, while the number of self-employed increased by 1 million. According to Kalinin, the number of economic subjects decreased by about 200,000 in a year and a half, employment decreased by 700,000.

The tax regime for self-employed was introduced as an experiment in four regions of Russia in January 2019. In the summer of 2020, the authorities extended the experiment to the whole country, it should last at least until 2028. A citizen who provides paid services can become self-employed, but at the same time does not hire its own employees. Annual income should not exceed 2.4 million rubles.
