Nearly two thousand people, including many left-wing elected officials wearing their tricolor scarf, marched on the afternoon of Wednesday May 24 in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, in support to the resigning mayor of this commune of Loire-Atlantiquewhich has become the symbol of local elected officials who are victims of violence, according to journalists from Agence France-Presse.
At the head of the procession, where there were also union activists, was brandished a banner proclaiming “Support for the mayor of Saint-Brevin, the Republic in danger”. To launch this march on the initiative of various left-wing organizations, the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland (Socialist Party), had the resigning mayor, Yannick Morez (various right) applauded for a long time. “He was the face, in values and in actions, of the Republic of everyday life, of the Republic of reality, not that of slogans”she launched.

“The Republic, we have it in common”
Asked about the absence of right-wing and Renaissance political figures at this march, the boss of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, considered that the message was ” bigger “. “We are all here to show that we are holding on, and we want to demonstrate. We are on the left, the mayor is on the right, but democracy and the Republic, we have it in common”, declared for his part the leader of the “rebellious”, Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The president of the group La France insoumise in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot, called for “take very seriously this threat from the far right”.
The Senate Law Commission will hear next Wednesday the prefect of Loire-Atlantique and the sub-prefect of Saint-Nazaire for “determine what means have been implemented” to deal with threats and attacks against Yannick Morez.
After the explosion caused by his resignation, Mr. Morez, a doctor by profession, heard in the Senate on May 17, had denounced a lack « flagrant » of state support after threats from the far right of which he has been the victim since the formalization, at the end of 2021, of the transfer near a school in his town of a reception center for applicants for asylum that has existed in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins since 2016.
