At fifty years old, the Saint-Denis-de-l’Hotel factory of the American Mars Petcare is preparing for a vast transformation. Specializing in food for cats and dogs, with well-known brands such as Whiskas, Sheba, Pedigree, this site, which has continued to grow since its opening in 1973, is in full construction to accommodate two new production lines.

Currently, 600,000 boxes and 1 million pouches leave the factory every day. The objective is to increase by 70% the production of freshness sachets, deemed more practical for pet owners, with an investment of 87 million euros.

The site, which currently has 380 employees, of which just under half in production, has already scheduled 22 hires, and others will be needed to run this equipment which should start at the end of next year.

Soon a biomass plant

Mars Petcare is benefiting from the continued rise in the number of cats and dogs in France, i.e. 23 million animals, 1.8% more than five years ago, and is consolidating its number two position behind Nestlé. In full growth, the company also plans “to reduce its carbon emissions by 80%”, indicates the president, Romain Dumas.

It will devote four million to the purchase of new machines to replace plastic over-packaging with cardboard and will also acquire a biomass plant, in partnership with the nearby Laiterie de Saint-Denis-de-l’Hôtel (LSDH ).

This installation, the total amount of which has not been disclosed, will have a power of 25 MW and will be installed on land near LSDH. It will be operated by Engie, but the project should not see the light of day before 2026.
