In southern China, student labor paid one euro per hour

“Now the salary offered is commonly 9 or 10 yuan per hour. [environ 1,30 euro]”, said Chen Nuo, who toured several labor agencies under the scorching sun. He is from a small town in Jiangxi (central China), and traveled specially to Dongguan, in the far south, in Guangdong, to look for a job at the factory. He looks disappointed: “Last year, I earned four thousand yuan a month, but this year I can only earn two thousand at this rate,” reports the website of the economic weekly Caixin.

Summer is a season when the need for cheap labor is strong in this region of the Pearl River Delta. Every July, tens of thousands of students flock to Dongguan and Shenzhen, alone or in groups organized by their school, to take jobs as workers on the manufacturing industry chains.
