A few days before the elections, the government announced a new support plan for the cultural sector.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, traveling to the province of Ciudad Real, launched a new support system for cinemas on Sunday. It will allow over 65s to attend a session every Tuesday for two euros. « Participation in cultural life is the guarantee of a healthy, full and happy old age », explained Pedro Sanchez.

This announcement comes two weeks before the municipal and regional elections on May 28, for which the People’s Party, currently in opposition, is given as the favorite against the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. « Culture must be a political commitment for each of the regions, for each city and, of course, for the Spanish government »said the Prime Minister, according to The Guardian .

These reduced price cinema tickets are one of the measures of a new plan for culture of 10 million euros. Part of the funds will be directly allocated to cinemas, hard hit during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This new project is introduced a year after the government of Pedro Sánchez launched a cultural voucher program for young people. 18-year-old Spaniards are entitled to €400 in vouchers for books, records, digital subscriptions, festivals, concerts, plays, exhibitions and films. France has already set up a similar program at the end of the health crisis to revive culture among young people. Once 18 the French have 300 euros on the culture pass.
