The vehicle fleet in Spain registered a slight increase of 0.6% last year, in line with the 0.8% increase in 2020, and stood at 29.9 million units, according to the Annual Report of the Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac). On the other hand, the average age of the national car fleet increased by 2.9% last year, to 13.49 years, exceeding the European average age of 11.15 years.

In the last year, for each newly registered passenger car, around 1.4 passenger cars over ten years old were sold, diverting the market towards older models and delaying the renovation of the park. In fact, passenger cars sold over 20 years old exceeded 300,000 units.

Last year the number of passenger cars grew by 0.7% in the year-on-year comparison, to 25.34 million units, while the growth of light commercial vehicles was 0.9%, with 3.9 million of them circulating along the Spanish roads.

The volume of industrial vehicles decreased by 6.9% in 2021, with 571,927 units, as did the number of buses and minibuses, down to 60,998 units, 1.8% less.

Thus, the number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants stood at the end of 2021 at 540 units, which represents an increase of 1.89% compared to the previous year and exceeding pre-pandemic figures (+1.5%).

As for the fleet of electric vehicles, at the end of last year there were 76,788 ‘zero emission’ vehicles circulating in Spain, 48.7% more than in 2020.

Of the total, 64,330 were passenger cars, 52.3% more; 12,091 were light commercial vehicles, 31.8% more. In addition, 59 were industrial vehicles, 22.9% more, and 308 were buses and minibuses, 71.1% more.

Likewise, plug-in hybrid models experienced a growth of 95.9% in 2021, with a total of 87,238 units in circulation, of which 87,000 were passenger cars, 96% more; 118 were commercial, 162% more; 3 were industrial vehicles (0%), and 117 were buses, 9.4% more.

On the other hand, the Spanish fleet of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles stood at 702,565 units, 43.4% more than in 2020. Of the total, 693,375 were passenger cars (+43.1%); 7,052 light commercial vehicles (+93.2%); 274 trucks (+2.2%) and 1,864 buses (+31.6%).

In addition, gas models in circulation grew to 105,983 units (+19.5%) last year. Passenger cars totaled 79,291 units (+20.2%); the commercial ones, 18,489 units (+19.4%); trucks, 4,816 units (+20.1%), and buses, 3,387 units (+5.5%).
