In northwestern Syria, where the war is frozen, several foreign jihadists – including some French – are said to have been handed over by an Islamist rebel group to the Turkish intelligence services, which transferred them to their country of origin. They are concerned about the threat that these foreign fighters pose to their internal security. According to several press leaks, the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which controls the northwestern province of Idlib, has in recent weeks handed over eight foreign fighters to Turkish intelligence – including two French – during three transfers, via the Bab al-Hawa crossing point on the border between Syria and Turkey.
